Avioth Basilica

The basilica in Avioth, a gem of Gothic art and listed Historical Monument since 1840, is surprisingly large (41 m long and 18 m tall under the vaults).

The building has withstood the centuries since it was built in around 1250. Following the miraculous apparition of a statue of the Virgin and Child, Avioth became an important place of pilgrimage. In front of the basilica, the 'Receiver', a world-unique monument in the Flamboyant Gothic style, is intended to hold the pilgrims' offerings. A plaster cast of this architectural marvel was even presented to the Museum of French Monuments in Paris!
